France defeats Portugal 1-0

06/07/2006 12:20:02

There are big celebrations in Paris after France reached the World Cup final with a 1-0 win over Portugal.

As the final whistle blew in Germany, fans watching the match in central Paris started up chants of 'Zizou, Zizou', the nickname of Zinedine Zidane, who scored the winning goal.

Fireworks and red flares went off in the packed Bastille area, where people were sitting on newspaper kiosks and hanging off lamp posts.

Striker Zinedine Zidane is the toast of France following his 33rd minute penalty in this morning's World Cup semifinal in Munich.

France will be aiming for their second World Cup triumph, while Monday's opponent Italy is gunning for title number four in Berlin.
