"One possible site would be at Edinburgh Park railway station"!!! HURRAY!! I've been saying ever since it opened that it was under-used AND mis-named as you CAN'T park on the north/Gyle side at Edinburgh Park. It will be a great alternative to the LRT bus Park and Ride at Ingliston for anyone coming in from the north and west of Edinburgh!
One possibly located at Cramond. Why not further west to more directly serve the growing population of South Queensferry and take some cars off the A90 on the approaches to Cramond? Are the council perhaps afraid of the reaction from FirstBus?
A park and ride at South Queensferry would take quite a lot of traffic from the A90. As we come under Edinburgh Council Tax it is ridiculous that we have to rely only on FirstBus. When the next set of parking restriction are brought in you will probably have the same fiasco as seen recently at the Grange etc.
#Nwe have to rely only on FirstBus
I recently had correspondence with Andrew Burns re the refusal by Lothian Buses to tread west of Cramond Brig / airport. He claimed that the fear was a fare war.He was at a loss to explain how such a fare war had not broken broken out in Mid and East Lothian where Lothian Buses compete against FirstBus on many routes.
If Edinburgh's buses don't serve ALL of the Lothians, then they should simply be called "Edinburgh's Buses", "Capital Buses" or something equally appropriate!
ie Edinburgh's Lothian Regional Transport buses!
#3 NAs we come under Edinburgh Council Tax it is ridiculous that we have to rely only on FirstBus.
Edinburgh Council (aka us) own well over 90% of the company with Mid, East and West Lothian owning the remainder.Following deregulation it would be an in contravention of the Act for Edinburgh Council to get involved in the day to day running of the buses other than in exceptional, clearly defined circumstances.Lothian Buses is the only company I know of in which the shareholders (us) are unable to exercise normal shareholder rights. Some deal!
Catch up guys, park and ride are yesterdays solution.
Research in Cities like York and Chester has shown that what happens is - the extra road space in the city fills up with local cars and the presence of large car parks and a percieved better service to centre damages local transport near the park and ride because people drive to it, rathe than use the local bus/train. result, no bodies better off.
The solution to Edinburgh's problems is to copy london and Stockholm and make commuters pay for the impact they have on local services.
Re Rod from Kirkliston, the simple answer is that Lothian Buses have kept the fares low in these areas for the last 20 years. I can travel to and from Edinburgh for the same fare (£1) as I did 20 years ago, deregulation first started in some parts of East Lothian in May 1986, prior to the rest of the Lothian Area in October 86.
Lothian have continually offered all its passengers the same fares structures, unlike First were the same distance on the same route can be double the price, yet its the same bus and driver.
Otherwise the fares would have been probably double by know.
Happy Birthday to deregulation.
