The family cookie
Over the past two decades, every time Highland Park resident Marla Templer attended a family event the first thing she would hear as she walked through the front door was "where's your mandel bread?" At the time, Templer and her daughter Rachael Halstuk couldn't have predicted that mandel bread, a twice-baked Jewish cookie similar to Italian biscotti, would have had such an impact on their lives.

Speechless
When I opened my mouth to speak, no words came out. This happened right after my husband, Burton, and I left Bally's Total Fitness in Morton Grove. As we walked to our car, he asked me a question. When I replied, he said, "What you just said makes no sense." The next time I tried to talk, I couldn't say anything at all."

Shop and learn at 67th annual antique show
A beautiful Japanese fishing float now rests atop the fireplace mantle in the home of Rosanne Barrett's grandson, who is an artist. She believed it was an ideal Christmas gift because of the item's aesthetics and its usefulness as a model for drawing round objects. Barrett found her float at the annual Premier North Shore Antiques Show and Sale put on by the Woman's Club of Wilmette.
