    Fire kills Moscow fire chief
    Herald Globe
    Sunday 21st March, 2010

The Moscow fire chief has been killed in a blaze just north of the city.

The Russian Emergency Ministry has announced the head of the Moscow fire department, Colonel Yevgeny Chernyshov, was trying to evacuate people from a burning office when the roof collapsed on him.

The fire, which broke out in a four-storey building, spread quickly through offices and adjoining buildings before fire crews were able to bring it under control.

Colonel Chernyshov's body was later recovered from the top floor of the building where the fire originally started.

Around 400 firefighters and over 100 fire vehicles were needed to fight the fire.
