Marsalis to headline 2007 jazz concertNext year's jazz concert to feature Wynton MarsalisWynton Marsalis, America's most recognized jazz figure, brings the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra

Ever since Rob Gibson took over as director of the Savannah Music Festival, people have been wanting to know when he was going to bring Wynton Marsalis.

Almost 20 years ago, they co-founded Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, laying the groundwork for the rise of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, which Marsalis leads, as the most popular jazz orchestra in the United States.

Next spring, five years after Gibson took a small-town festival and transformed it into a nationally known cultural event, Marsalis will headline the 2007 music festival.

The trumpeter, composer and arranger - the country's most recognized exponent of jazz, jazz history and jazz appreciation - will appear with his orchestra on March 24 at the 2,500-seat Johnny Mercer Theatre.

The music festival will announce its entire 2007 roster of artists on Oct. 5.

That the country's biggest and best-known jazz orchestra is playing in Savannah's biggest theater makes this the most anticipated jazz outing in recent memory - a must-see for any jazz lover.

The music festival declined to comment on the date.

But according to the live music database Pollstar (pollstar.com) and Ted Kurland Associates, Marsalis' booking agency (tedkurland.com), the gig is going to happen. The March performance will be the third appearance by a member of the Marsalis family in a year.

Marsalis' younger brother, drummer Jason Marsalis, performed with the Marcus Roberts Trio during the 2006 music festival and its high school jazz band workshops.

Their pianist father, Ellis, is expected to play, along with Jason, at the grand opening of Kokopelli's Jazz, a new nightclub on Broughton Street, on Sept. 29 and 30. Tickets won't go on sale for Wynton Marsalis' concert until Oct. 6.

So far, musicians expected to be in the line-up include country music star Marty Stuart, jazz singer Dianne Reeves, blues guitarist and singer Susan Tedeschi and two Celtic ensembles: Flook and Leahy.

Marsalis was born in New Orleans, La., in 1961. Since then he has won nine Grammy awards. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for "Blood on the Fields," recorded with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Marsalis is the first and only jazz composer to win the prestigious award. He has produced 33 jazz records and 11 classical records, selling more than seven million worldwide.looking for tickets?
