Pilots quit Philippine Airlines for higher-paying jobs
    Herald Globe
    Saturday 31st July, 2010
    (IANS)

The Philippines' flag carrier Saturday cancelled about a dozen domestic and international flights after several pilots resigned for higher-paying jobs with foreign airlines.

Dozens of flights were also delayed for hours due to the lack of pilots, according to Philippine Airlines (PAL).

PAL spokesman Jonathan Gesmundo said the problem affected flights using Airbus A320 planes, which account for 16 of the airline's 39 operating aircraft.

'Unfortunately, we have had recent indiscriminate resignations of A320 pilots and we are now faced with inadequate flight deck crew to man A320 aircraft,' Gesmundo said.

He said the pilots resigned after they were offered better-paying jobs by foreign airlines, which PAL could not match.

Gesmundo said the pilots should have given PAL six months to train their replacements.

'PAL will soon be filing appropriate charges against those pilots who chose not to report for work immediately after submitting their resignation letters,' he said.

'Most of the pilots still owe PAL the cost of their aviation school training, which run into millions of pesos per pilot,' he added.

Gesmundo said PAL may have to ground its A320s as it would take the airline several months to train new pilots.

He said the carrier was now adjusting its schedules by merging flights or using bigger aircraft to accommodate passengers affected by the cancellations.

You can blame those people from resignation, just look at the top scientist of pagasa group. They resigned and work overseas for better pay. Look at Aquinos goverment thay are not all filled out because of tha pay and the boss like to jump on them like a bunch of stupid kids.If the President of the Philippines will not listen to his cabinet and advisors he will go down in history as a failed president. He has lot of problem ahead of him because he is the problem too.

It’s just too bad that passengers suffer the consequences of delayed and cancelled flights. However, being employees of a public service company, those pilots should have thought about the riding public first and foremost. And I also believe that most of those pilots were PAL employees before they were given the opportunity to enrol in aviation school. Is it really how you pay back the company that had given you lots of opportunities and a heck of amenities that they given compared to ground personnel. LIFE IS NOT ONLY ABOUT MONEY ALTHOUGH IS HELPS BUT HOW ABOUT MAINTAINING JUST

    Reminder

Philippines is the only country in the world who the flag carrier of the land be operated or run by a private firm. The new president should think about it and this is one of the product of corruptions done by the government. Are you corrupt too and join to them ?

    PAL

Philippine Airlines is the best Airline I ever flew on, much better than those in the US. Its a shame to have people leave for better jobs, but the pilots owe it to there families to make what they can.If other airlines can afford to pay them (pilots)PAL should unless management is bad.Having problems runing the airline.

    what goes around comes around

Lucio tan bright boys should rethink how they treat his employee.Wake up we don’t live in China where the people work for you have less education. We have one of the best pilots in the world. They are much qualified than the other pilots in the world thats why other airline get them. Lucio Tan has been trying to make PAL like Shoemart. He wants his employee to be contractual. He already killed the union of the pilots and the ground personnel. You should have long term planning. Treat your employee well. You cannot play God all the time. Look back where you came from Lucio Tan. You are as poor as a rat when you came from China and decided to live in the Philippines. Marcos made you rich. This people from PAL work hard for their money. Give what is due them. Part of what you have now is part of the corruption that you collaborate with Marcos. Shame on you.

    Nothing But Bad Karma

It’s a pity this has to happen to PAL dubbed as Asia’s First Airline. Perhaps because of greed and the arduous desire of the very owners of PAL to return to that monopolistic control of the airline industry in the Philippines - this sad thing has to happen. The local govt civil aviation agencies are also to blame. Gone are the glory days of the Philippines in the world of aviation. Almost everything went down the drain and succumbed to widespread corruption.
